Long views, great people

“You're thinking about astronomy, aren't you?” My wife was asking, but knew the answer. Knew the look. With wide horizons and low light around us, it was natural for me.

It was fall 2023, and we were at the newly opened Long View Ciderhouse in Southington, enjoying the amazing views and great hard cider.

I sent them an email that next day, asking if I could bring up my telescope. They enthusiastically said yes, and jumped on the chance when I offered to show their guests the heavens above, too. They’re great people, eight generations dedicated to the land and community.

That started a wonderful partnership, and I’ve been up there probably a dozen times since. The guests seem to love it, and I do, too.

It's amazing to me how many adults have never looked through a telescope before, or haven’t since they were kids. It’s a family-friendly place, as well, and it’s awesome to see kids view Saturn or the moon for the first time. Core memories, for sure.

First viewing of the fall-ish season tonight! I’ll be there after 6:30, watching the moon rise, and bask in its glory until close. Maybe we’ll peek at Mars, too. Stop by and say hi!
